The way they've laid out the control modification screen makes one think they designed it for some insane eccentric aircraft engineer, who thinks about things in a sort of 'A and then C, but not before X' kind of way. I'm not one to critique a game strongly for a poor-looking interface, but this one looks absolutely horrible - so much so, in fact, that I couldn't stay quiet about it.

Not quite a replica of the PC version, this features a dumbed-down set of screens that I found to be a real eyesore.

The first part of SoF Gold that you'll meet is the interface. It's you, a handful of weapons, and a bit of explosives against the world, or at least some of the more vicious terrorists in it. You've played them before, so you probably already know what to expect. The question that begs answering - will this really be a good port title on the PS2? Gameplay, Controls, Interface Even with these problems, the PC version was a decent play, and still definitely worth getting from a bargain bin. Later on the enemies themselves became truly nightmarish, with terrorists in Iraq packing body armor that made them nigh invulnerable to some of your smaller weapons. Even at the normal difficulty level your character was extremely tough, sometimes to the point of absurdity. It stood out as innovative for its realistic scenarios, but still suffered from combat that was more suited to an action movie. Still, even on the PC version, this title suffered from some problems. It was relatively believable for the first few missions of the game as you used real-world-style weapons to take on terrorists who threatened nuclear attack. With a more realistic plotline than many of the sci-fi games of this genre, Soldier of Fortune was an anti-terrorist fan's dream. This meant more gruesome deaths that were more in keeping with the damage pumped out by real world weaponry.

With a few innovative features, Soldier of Fortune was one of the first games to handle a multitude of damage effects, spreading injury across twenty-six zones on the human body. This style of game, a first-person shooter, is a venerable classic, arming you with insane amounts of firepower and pitting you against all number of enemies. Soldier of Fortune: Gold Edition is the resurrection of an old favorite of mine from the PC world. The time taken to start levels can be a bit slow, but this isn't really a problem - we're just used to being spoilt by other games. There's a plethora of other tweaks too, from simple bug fixes to gameplay niceties that just add to the fun. The experience is further improved by the addition of six new player skins and even the presently unfashionable single-player mode is treated to enhanced bot Al, which makes crippling the enemy before killing them even more satisfying. These can also be played in the already familiar DM styles too, adding a lot more variety to the game.

The bulk of the update is taken up by no less than 18 new multiplayer maps, which cover the two new Deathmatch modes - Control and Conquer The Bunker. It's not that you have to be a twisted sicko to like this game, but it certainly helps. It hasn't quite dragged the gore levels up to those of an abattoir, but no doubt hundreds of inbred gung-ho firearm maniacs in the US will be inspired by it before they nip out for a spot of animal molesting. The team has been beavering away and has come up with a worthwhile update. Ravensoft has now unveiled the Gold Edition patch, and for UK fans of the game who won't be treated to the special boxed edition it's a must. We gave it a very respectable 80 per cent and then hurried down to church to pray it hadn't tainted our mortal souls. It was all good unwholesome fun, and not surprisingly many FPS fans lapped it up. What they came up with, however, wasn't particularly true to life in terms of looks - the venerable Quake 2 engine just isn't that good - but it was teeth-clenchingly gruesome in the way that limbs separated from bodies, blood splattered in all directions and the wounded moaned in agony as their lives seeped away before our eyes.
